Independent Furnishing

It is difficult to live alone. Regardless of feeling independent while living with Parents, moving away from home has specific problems even when living with Roommates. Thinking of living alone, I have a few tips to assist in the process.

Even if already having several essentials, it takes a long time to decorate or furnish an apartment or house. There is a belief you move in and everything has to be bought in one day. Should you be prepared because of having lived somewhere before?

When moving from one furnished home to another unfurnished home, all the furniture and big items are available. When moving from a bedroom to an unfurnished apartment, there is a lot to think about. I dislike impulse purchases making home decor decisions.

Having Roommates in the past, it is amazing how many people remember a bed and do not remember shampoo. Parents and Guardians buy a lot of consumable essentials. Consumable means it is gone after using the product. It needs to be replaced. Consumables include shampoo, conditioner, toilette paper, shaving creams, soap, toothpaste, deodorant and hair jell. Most people know they need food, water, gasoline or a bus pass.

The first time moving in with a Roommate, we forgot to buy toilette paper and stole it from a national park. The second time living with different Roommates, I made fun of the Newly Roommates that did not know how to buy essentials like toilette paper. It was mostly in jest.

After living on my own, I have compiled a list of important things to have: towels, toiletries, one pan, one pot, one wooden spoon, one rubber pancake flipper, one set of utensils, one set of dishes, one set of cups, one chair, one table, one mop, one bucket, one broom, cleansers, one type of vacuum, one radio/television, one computer/cellphone and a mattress. The vacuum can be a push or hand held vacuum. Spend money on these items. They are important for many years and are essential to living.

People argue a bed is not important. It is extremely important. I have tried sleeping in a sleeping bag with pillows and heavy blankets. It makes sleep difficult. I was able to do this for several months; however, it would have been better to spend a couple hundred dollars to buy a mattress and upgrade the frame later.

Hollywood or metal bed-frames are inexpensive. Most furniture and mattress companies sell them. A box spring is unnecessary. Use a thick piece of sheet wood to hold the mattress. Most of the time, after buying an ideal bed frame sheet wood is ideal for a lower, comfortable mattress height.

Why is this important? The main idea is to move and keep working to pay bills. Rent and utilities are expensive. There is hardly any time to go shopping. You could plan to take unpaid-time-off from work in a couple weeks. It is inconvenient and you will spend a lot of money on things that are inadequate in a few months. It is better to take a deep breath and plan expenses beyond regular living costs.

Desperation is awful. It is better to have workable furniture over feeling without basic conveniences. Feeling without makes people buy whatever, instead of, waiting to buy ideal furniture. I recommend plastic furniture. A couple plastic bins for dirty laundry and stuff contains clutter. Hangers are nice for moving folded clothes out of the linen closet or suitcase for organizing clothing. Plastics drawers are easy to move. They stack or unstack as needed.

Plastic storage and furniture is inexpensive. When ready to make larger purchases, there is still a budget for getting better stuff. It also looks good. I have black plastic drawers as a night stand. It blends into the overall appearance the room. It is like a futuristic flare amongst antiques.

After living somewhere awhile, it is nice to buy towels sets and soap dishes. I have found great deals at local shops. Everything you need on a regular basis, you probably already own. There are seasonal items on sale. If you sunbath, you will need a beach blanket.

It is chaotic. There is an unsettling feeling when realizing it is not quite like home. It is a new home. There are adjustments to make so it feels more like home. It might take months to really settle into a new dwelling. Functionality is important.
