Livable Variations

Interior design is tricky. People spend a lot of money for unsatisfying ambiance. Watching shows on the DIY channel and Better Homes and Gardens Network is fun. Occasionally a reasonable tip like varying the height of furniture makes sense.

These are practical tips. Variety creates interesting landscapes. In addition to varying heights of furniture vary tones of color from light to medium, medium to dark and light to dark for another level of interest. Imagine a black and white ink print in a black frame on a steel-blue wall. It is visually appealing because of high-contrast between elements.

In the video "Exposed: Color Palette" a palette dedicates a greater portion of a living space to a handful of colors, so it isn't as overwhelming. This means the walls, floors, ceiling and other large object are neutral or a part of the main color palette.

A room may emulate a color scheme. I have a complimentary color scheme in the living room and contrasting color scheme in my bedroom. The only common color is orange-gold. No one wonders around in orange-gold every day; therefore, we incorporate the colors of the rainbow with patterns on furniture, curtains and so-on. The main point of a successful color scheme is to accommodate all colors of the rainbow. We all change clothes and buy knick-knacks.

In the previous video "Exposed: Curtains" the main body of the drapes is yellow, yet the some of the boxes in the pattern are orange, blue, violet and green. The additional colors correlate to other potential colors without being overt. Since they are a regular part of the room they set a standard for the entire room to create an automatic compliment for other smaller objects.

Whether monochrome, complimentary, gradient or contrasting create a grander appearance through the walls, floors, doors, drapes, larger furniture and so-on. Patterns, paintings, sculptures and any decorative fixed objects assist in make a home livable and fun.
